PEKAN: A sense of nostalgia filled the air as Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Almarhum Sultan Iskandar witnessed the proclamation of a Tengku Mahkota Pahang for the second time in her life.
The first was on Oct 23, 1977, at Istana Abu Bakar here when she was just 17.
Reigning Sultan Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had invited Tunku Azizah to attend his proclamation as Tengku Mahkota then.
At that time, Al-Sultan Abdullah was 18.
“He was so polite when he asked my father whether he could invite me to the ceremony.
“My father granted his request,” she said, in relating the occasion some 42 years ago, which she said “not many were aware of”.
“Today, in the same palace, I witnessed my son receiving the title of Tengku Mahkota Pahang, succeeding his father,” she said after the ceremony on Tuesday.
Her eldest son Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah was named the heir apparent to the Pahang throne.
Tunku Azizah was also proclaimed as the new Tengku Ampuan Pahang on Tuesday.
Another significant moment was Tunku Azizah’s crown, which was once worn by the previous Tengku Ampuan Pahang.
The diamond-studded crown was last worn by Tengku Ampuan Afzan, who was the consort of Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Ahmad Shah.
She served as the Raja Permaisuri Agong between April 26, 1979, and April 25, 1984.
Tengku Ampuan Afzan was Sultan Abdullah’s mother.
She passed away in 1988 and the title of Tengku Ampuan Pahang had not been used since then until Tunku Azizah’s proclamation.
Like Tengku Ampuan Afzan, Tunku Azizah will assume the role of Raja Permaisuri Agong after Sultan Abdullah takes his oath of office as the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong today.-Star
