KUALA LUMPUR: There is nothing shameful in not having high academic qualifications as honesty is more important, says Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
"It is not a question of qualifications and from where it was obtained.
"The question is one of honesty and I am sure this is the image that will impress the rakyat more than one's qualifications," he said after announcing the soft launch of the Democracy Fest here Friday (Feb 8).
Amirudin that it did not matter if one only had an SPM certificate.
"I am not ashamed to say I am a graduate from a local university, Universiti Putra Malaysia, as that is the level of education I achieved," he said.
Amirudin, who is Selangor PKR Leadership Council chairman, was responding to a question on whether he would implement a standard operating procedure to ensure those under the state administration held degree or doctorate qualifications.
Amirudin said such a system was very subjective as there are times when an individual without proper qualifications is able to manage well.
"There are also those with degrees who make mistakes in their decisions due to other factors," he said.
The issue of qualifications comes in the wake of questions over Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Marzuki Yahya's academic credentials.
Marzuki previously said he had a degree from the University of Cambridge pursued through a distance -learning programme.
However, he later admitted that his degree was actually from the Cambridge International University in the United States.
Checks on the US-based university had raised more questions on its legitimacy.- Star
