Japan Had Pokémon Tamagotchis But They Completely Sold Out in 15 Minutes

Pokémon x Tamagotchi, the highly anticipated collaboration between the two massively popular IPs, has successfully sold out even before its official release in Japan.

For those who are unfamiliar, the Tamagotchi is a handheld virtual pet simulation game from Bandai which became one of the biggest toy fads of the 1990s and early 2000s.

The latest iteration of the keychain-sized toy features the Pokémon Eevee, letting owners take care of their Eevee character as it grows into one of its various evolutions.

Announced back in November, the special edition device was made available in two outer shells – the I Love Eevee version and the Colorful Friends version.

While the first batch of Eevee Tamagotchi was officially released in Japan on January 26 for ¥2,300 ($20), pre-orders instantly sold out across retailers in Japan back in November due to the high demand for both versions.

Online retailers have since been reselling the items in limited supply at significantly higher prices.

Just days after the official release, however, Nintendo Soup reported that a distributor for the Eevee X Tamagotchi has refused to take future orders as the iteration has reportedly been discontinued.

There are currently no details whether the toy will have an official international release or if iterations featuring other Pokémon characters will be made available soon.
