Ancient rock formation collapses near Miri Saturday (Feb 22)
MIRI: An ancient rock formation resembling a horse collapsed here Saturday (Feb 22) morning.
The 50-metre-tall cliff face located about 60km away from Miri broke into pieces and collapsed into the South China Sea, and nature-lovers are asking whether the construction of food stalls and a concrete walkway nearby contributed to the collapse.
One of these is Malaysian Nature Society Miri chairman Musa Musbah, who said that the rock that collapsed is made of sandstone.
"At a gradient of 45°dto the hill-slope, the geological sandstone structure is fragile. If they (tourism authorities) continue to construct the building at the cliff, that building may also collapse and slide down the cliff," he said when contacted.
A RM3mil project comprising food-stalls and a walkway is being carried out in the area by the state tourism authorities.
Tourists also shared their concernson social media, saying that such sensitive geological areas must be free from human development projects.
They have urged the state authorities to stop all construction works at the beachfront, saying that these areas must be protected from any commercial development. - Star
