Survey: Malays favour Muhyiddin as PM but not his party

Chinese community backs Umno? Ramasamy dismisses survey findings

Malaysia Bharu: The Chinese favour Umno over DAP? That will be the day. Not only is Emir Research’s findings dubious, it is ridiculously silly and laughable.

Going by probabilities alone, it would have taken approximately 95 percent of Chinese to have toppled the historical dominance of the Umno/BN monster in the 14th general election (GE14).

This is further attested by the fact that both MCA and MIC, already in the doldrums over the past decade, were decimated and buried for good in GE14, so much so they are now deprived even their traditional ‘window dressing’ pride because their communities have deserted them almost in toto.

They are tolerated in Perikatan Nasional (PN) as long as they behave as the proverbial three monkeys.

This so-called survey by former Bersatu supreme council member Rais Hussin appears nothing more than a message to the warring factions in PN/BN/Muafakat Nasional - projecting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as the leading contender and the community’s choice to lead the Malay-Muslim coalition into battle in GE15.

The so-called “25 percent Chinese support” is thrown in to strengthen Muhyiddin’s standing while ridiculing DAP.

Bluemountains: This is a survey conducted by a senior Bersatu official to gauge the popularity of his leader, the Bersatu president.

It is hard to believe that the survey is unbiased, especially on the part that 25 percent of Chinese support Umno.

It is even more unbelievable when it says only 17 percent of Chinese support DAP when voting results have consistently shown DAP candidates receiving at least 80 percent of the Chinese votes.

Just ask any Chinese (except the MCA and Gerakan Chinese) and you will know what I mean.

Doing business was tough during Pakatan Harapan’s rule. Everyone is so used to making easy money with corruption greasing the way. Harapan was a stumbling block.

YellowRusa5552: Putting aside the issue of reliability of the survey, it shouldn't come as a surprise since Muhyiddin himself has declared that he is a "Malay first, Malaysian second" politician.

So, it’s a no brainer that Malays will favour such leaders. Sadly, with the likes of him in charge, the racial divide will get even worse.

His strategy is simple, win the bulk of Malay support with his Malay-first policies and simultaneously throw crumbs to non-Malays to maintain a small 10-20 percent support. This way he figures he will win at least 60 percent of the total parliamentary seats.

Siva1967: If you go the Kelantan and carry out a survey on which football team they support, the answer might an overwhelming 80 percent or 90 percent support Kelantan FA.

However, if the same survey is carried out in Bangsar or Petaling Jaya, 80 percent or 90 percent will say Manchester United or Liverpool. The demographic of the people that are being polled is important.

As mention by other readers, is the survey reflective of sentiments of the whole country? Furthermore, the main question would be when were these surveys carried out? End June, early July and for how long? Did the effects of the Sabah state election have any bearings on the survey? And many other factors.

I too received a phone call and several questions were asked of me. My quick and fast answer was that I was not satisfied with the backdoor government. The robbing of the people’s mandate cannot be accepted.

Dr Raman: The unintended, unsurprising but most telling finding/confirmation is that racial and religious politics is well established in Malaysia.

It can be safely concluded that the trend has deteriorated progressively over the last 60 years, and is the worst at this point in time, where the nation's progress is held at ransom.

We don't need regular polling to find out this obvious fact, as everything else in the Malaysian psyche is manifested by racial and religious politics.

But no one seems to be concerned or the least perturbed to address and reverse this obvious fact.

MoonMan54: Penang Deputy Chief Minister P Ramasamy, most non-Malays - and Malays too - don't buy into these findings.

But the truth is, it may become a reality in the not-too-distant future. The reason could be because our political future is dependent on frogs - both aspiring and spineless politicians - and insecure and disillusioned citizens.

The country is governed by renegade backdoor politicians. Everything looks uncertain.

While this is the ground-level reality, parties like DAP, PKR and Amanah are stubbornly controlled by politicians who don't seem to embrace change. They are like cowboys and cowgirls, who prefer wrestling in the mud of cheap politics.

They do walkouts on yesterday's issues and cry foul when Parliament is managed not in their favour. DAP is surely facing a bad brand image by the continued image bashing, not just by racist politicians but by their own kind.

Being defensive is not helping and making face-level changes is like wearing make-up. PKR is lost. No one other than its president Anwar Ibrahim seems to care.

Where is everyone who made the 2018 line-up? The Harapan that we witnessed is certainly fast disappearing.

Ramasamy, don’t just talk, walk the talk. Malaysians everywhere are being politically bashed.

Xtcher: Whatever the DAP may think of the results of the survey, the party should keep a weather eye on those results.

Sometimes the noisy ones may give a wrong impression of the size of the support it is getting while the support of the silent majority is what really counts.
