Health Ministry to seek info on Pfizer slashing vaccine production target

The Health Ministry is seeking further information on the claim that pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc is slashing its production target for Covid-19 vaccine doses this year.

According to Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, to date, the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has not received any document from the company to start evaluation for the vaccine registration and testing.

"We also do not have any information about the problem with the vaccine supply as reported.

"However, the ministry will always monitor the progress in the development of the Covid-19 vaccine by Pfizer, and we will seek further information regarding this matter," he said in a statement today.

On Friday, Reuters reported that Pfizer is facing challenges in its supply chain for the raw materials used in its vaccine.

This has led to the company anticipating to produce 50 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine this year, down from an earlier target of 100 million.

Noor Hisham said that it is the duty of NPRA to ensure that every pharmaceutical product is registered in Malaysia before it hits the market.

This requires the product to undergo evaluation and testing processes to check its quality, safety and efficacy. - Mkini
