Zahid arrives at Istana Kinta for audience with Perak ruler

 

Umno president and Bagan Datuk assemblyperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is expected to meet with Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah at Istana Kinta, Ipoh at 10am today.

He was seen entering the palace at 9.48am. Zahid was not accompanied by any other party leaders.

Perak Umno held a special state-level meeting yesterday night. However, all leaders who attended the meeting were tight-lipped about who would be the party's candidate for menteri besar.

Sources told Malaysiakini that three names are on the table, namely Perak party chief Saarani Mohamad, former menteri besar Zambry Kadir and Rungkup assemblyperson Shahrul Zaman Yahya.

Previously, Perak Pakatan Harpan and Saarani have sought an audience with Sultan Nazrin, but media were told that there has yet to be a new menteri besar candidate.

Perak needs a new menteri besar after Bersatu's Ahmad Faizal Azumu was ousted via a vote of confidence in the state legislature yesterday.

Perak Umno was unhappy with Faizal, especially over the unilateral appointment of an Umno assemblyperson as his political secretary.

However, it is unclear whether Umno has the numbers to form the next state government.

The party has 25 state seats. Thirty is needed to form a state government.

Bersatu - with five seats - is stung over the move to remove Faizal, while PAS (three seats) has said it would not join in efforts to form the next state government.

If Umno can't secure enough support from Umno and PAS, it will have to reach across the aisle to cobble support from Harapan. - Mkini
