MDEC hires from Microsoft, Media Prima and others after 8 top execs quit
The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has announced a line-up of new hires from local and multi-national giants to replace eight top executives who left the company since October last year.
The changes, which includes hiring staff members from IBM, Microsoft, Celcom, Touch ’n Go, Astro, Edelman, Pemandu Associates, Media Prima, technology start-ups, and more, also marks MDEC's 25th anniversary and reflects its commitment to establish the digital economy as a key driver of the nation’s growth.
MDEC chief executive officer Surina Shukri said the corporation's "Reinvent" mission includes bringing in exceptional talents with both private and public sector experience, coupled with new approaches and thinking.
"The objective is clear - to intensify MDEC’s initiatives to grow the nation’s digital economy for the many, especially in navigating unprecedented disruption and opportunities in the new norm.
"The focus will be on enabling digital skills and jobs for the people, enabling digital and technology businesses, accelerating digital adoption and driving digital investments," Surina said in a statement.
"We will not be distracted from our mission and I strongly re-affirm the executive leadership’s close and collaborative working relationship with our chairperson and the board of directors to holistically reinvent MDEC for the future,” she added.
MDEC chairperson Rais Hussin yesterday denied a news report by online portal The Vibes that suggested the eight resignations were signs of an internal crisis.
According to the statement, MDEC's former vice-president Hasnul Hadi Samsudin was the first to resign, on Oct 3 last year, followed by former MDEC human capital director Suzana Nawardin on Oct 31.
Three others comprising former MDEC chief operating officer Ng Wan Peng and two vice-presidents resigned at the end of last December.
As for the two more, former vice-president and chief information officer Abdul Malick Aboobakar ended his time with the company on Jan 17 while MDEC digital inclusion director Nordarzy Razak Norhalim's last day will be on Feb 7.
"As we institutionalise the recommendations from the holistic governance review and recalibrate our capability and capacity to deliver on our ‘Reinvent’ mission, MDEC has naturally seen movement at all levels – this is expected and warranted," Rais said.
In recent weeks, the agency welcomed two new top executives - chief financial officer Nora Junita Mohd Hussaini and human capital director Nazral Safril Mohammad Sapari.
Rais was appointed to chair the government agency last June. He was formerly on the Bersatu supreme council and remains a party member.
Established in 1996, MDEC is tasked with growing the digital economy in Malaysia. It is parked under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry. - Mkini
