'Not true' - MDEC boss dismisses executive exodus claim

Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chairperson Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff has dismissed a news report claiming a slew of senior executives have quit in recent months.

The Vibes earlier reported that the eight senior management executives had left.

It also claimed the government agency was “split into two camps” - one under Rais and another under CEO Surina Shukri.

In a message to Malaysiakini, Rais branded the allegation “not true” but also said he was looking into the matter.

“I have my team working on it. Will revert with a response.

“Not true, though! [...] but will check the facts and revert,” he said.

He also denied claims of there being “en bloc’’ resignations, telling Free Malaysia Today there was “no crisis” at the agency as changes were normal.

“When people move on, others join, MDEC continues,” he told the news website.

According to The Vibes, the eight who resigned were Ng Wan Peng (chief operating officer), Nor Faizah Othman (chief financial officer), Abdul Malick Aboobakar (chief information officer), Wee Choong Hew (investment development vice president), Hasnul Samsudin (creative multimedia director), Norhizam Kadir (growth ecosystem development vice president), Suzana Nawardin (human capital director) and Darzy Norhalim (sharing economy ecosystem director).

Ng was reported to have left earlier this month after almost 18 years at MDEC.

In recent weeks, the agency welcomed two new top executives - chief financial officer Nora Junita Mohd Hussaini and human capital director Nazral Safril Mohammad Sapari.

Rais was appointed to chair the government agency last June. He was formerly on the Bersatu supreme council and remained a party member.

Established in 1996, MDEC is tasked with growing the digital economy in Malaysia. It is parked under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry. - Mkini
