Kit Siang nudges PM to uphold 'no double standards' pledge

 

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should uphold his "no double standards" pledge by directing Health Minister Adham Baba to retract an order which shortened the quarantine period for ministers returning from overseas official trips, Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang said.

He noted that Muhyiddin had in October last year given his assurance that there were no double standards in Covid-19 quarantine rules, for as even he and other ministers were not exempted.

"Is the prime minister's pledge to count for nothing that the health minister can now gazette double standards for complying with Covid-19 quarantine standard operating procedures (SOP) for ministers, which made nonsense of the prime minister’s assertion last October that 'I am the most obedient person'?" Lim asked.

The DAP veteran was responding to Adham's order, which reduced the quarantine period for ministers from 10 to three days.

Lim, in his statement, also noted that Muhyiddin previously said he would use the "rotan" (cane) against those who do not comply with the SOPs to curb the spread of Covid-19.

"Is he going to start using the 'rotan' against his own health minister?" he asked.

Lim said actions such as Adham's order undermines public trust at a time when there should be an all-of-government and whole-of-society efforts to fight the pandemic.

"Muhyiddin should also be mindful of the constitutional guarantee of equality before the law for all Malaysians, as entrenched in Article 8 of the Malaysian Constitution," he said. - Mkini
