Two more alleged Jho Low associates hit with tax suits
The taxman is targeting another two of 1MDB-linked Low Taek Jho’s alleged associates, Casey Tang Keng Chee and Jasmine Loo Ai Swan, for purported unpaid tax.
The government filed the tax suits against Tang and Loo in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 4 last year and Jan 8, respectively.
The plaintiff is seeking RM6.7 million from Tang and RM2.4 million from Loo.
Yesterday, it was reported that Tan Kim Loon was hit with a lawsuit seeking alleged tax arrears of RM67.9 million.
At present, the police are still trying to locate businessperson Low, also known as Jho Low, along with Tan, Tang and Loo to assist an ongoing investigation into the 1MDB scandal.
Tang’s and Loo’s names were referred to multiple times in the course of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s RM2.28 billion 1MDB corruption trial.
According to copies of the statements of claim sighted by Malaysiakini, Tang’s and Loo’s Identity Card (IC) numbers cited in the cause papers matched that of the Tang and Loo being sought by authorities probing 1MDB.
The government is seeking alleged unpaid taxes from Tang for a nine-year assessment period from 2009 to 2017, and from Loo for a five-year period between 2012 and 2018 (2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018).
The plaintiff (government) claimed assessment notices were sent via AR registered post to Tang on Oct 6 last year, at his last known address in Taman Sri Endah, Kuala Lumpur.
The government noted that the assessment notices have been received and signed via return of the yellow card acknowledging receipt of the said notices.
The government alleged that assessment notices were also issued to Loo on Nov 18 last year via registered post at her last known address at Jalan Seri Beringin 2, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur.
The plaintiff claimed that until now, Tang and Loo have not paid a total of RM6,779,852.36 and RM2,496,133.05 in taxes, respectively.
The total amount sought from the duo is inclusive of penalties imposed on them for each assessment year for alleged failure to pay.
The government also seeks five percent interest on the total tax allegedly owed, calculated from the date of judgment to date of realisation; costs; and any other relief deemed fit by the court.
According to the online cause list, the legal action against Tang is fixed for case management before the High Court Registry in Kuala Lumpur at 9am today, through e-review (online).
Meanwhile, the tax suit against Loo is fixed for case management before the same High Court Registry for 9am on Feb 18, also through e-review. - Mkini
