Cops probe portal over report on outbreak at vaccination centre

 

Police are investigating healthcare news portal CodeBlue over a report about a Covid-19 outbreak at a Covid-19 vaccination centre (PPV) hosted at Setia City Convention Centre in Shah Alam.

The report, citing sources at the vaccination centre, claimed authorities failed to adequately act after Covid-19 cases were discovered.

Police yesterday questioned CodeBlue editor-in-chief Boo Su-Lyn at the Shah Alam district police headquarters.

The portal said in a statement that Boo was investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code relating to statements conducing to public mischief, which carries a punishment of up to two years imprisonment, a fine or both, upon conviction.

She is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which relates to the improper use of network facilities or services.

The portal said that it understood a report was lodged by the management of the vaccination centre.

“Boo cooperated with the police but turned down a request to name the sources of her report,” it said.

The portal said the report was a matter of public interest.

“CodeBlue condemns the government’s harassment and intimidation of our editor-in-chief, who was merely reporting workplace safety concerns by PPV volunteers who had sacrificed their time and put themselves at risk to serve the country in the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

“The government should not be targeting whistleblowers who provided accurate information as confirmed by the CITF (Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force).

“Instead, it should learn from the lesson and improve its implementation of the necessary safety measures,” the news portal added.

The CITF acknowledged an outbreak at the vaccination centre but disputed claims of a cover-up. - Mkini
