Dr M says he met Zafrul, prescribed ‘ideas’ for Covid-19 crisis

Dr Mahathir Mohamad said recently that Tengku Zafrul Aziz had reached out to him for a meeting.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has revealed that he met finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and shared his ideas with him on the handling of the Covid-19 crisis.

In an online interview with comedian Harith Iskandar tonight, Mahathir said Tengku Zafrul had asked him on how to address the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

“I answered a lot of questions on how to handle the SOPs for example and on vaccines. Whatever he asked, I answered truthfully.

“He listened to me and jotted it down in his notebook. I hope he will carry out some of my ideas.”

Previously, Mahathir revealed that Tengku Zafrul, the coordinating minister for the National Recovery Plan (NRP), had reached out to him for a meeting.

The country’s longest-serving prime minister said then that he believed the meeting was related to the NRP.

On whether he was offered any official position to assist with the NRP, Mahathir said he was not.

“He gave me a Quran as a gift, a very nice gift, but no invitation to join. I suppose he wants to do it without me at all.”

However, Mahathir added that if he were to be invited to be involved in the NRP in whatever capacity, he would be willing to resign from Pejuang, the political party which he founded.

“I would like to give my full effort to solving the Covid-19 problem. I don’t have to be in Pejuang even. Pejuang will carry on.”

Separately, Mahathir said he believed there was too much politicking at the moment and that he only wanted to do what he could to help the people.

“I’m very concerned about the sufferings of the people, I’m not interested in the political aspect, I’m not interested in becoming prime minister.

“The people are suffering very much, and they are angry, and it is justified because the number of cases keeps increasing.

“To tackle such a crisis, you need experience. However, this government is made up of people who have no experience in governing, particularly during a crisis,” he said. -FMT
