Court orders Husam Musa to pay RM100k compensation to KPK
The High Court in Kota Bharu yesterday ordered former Amanah vice-president Husam Musa to pay compensation of RM100,000 to Kompleks Perkayuan Kelantan Sdn Bhd (KPK) for defamation.
The court also ordered Husam to pay RM110,933.92 in costs for the judgment recorded against him on Oct 1, 2019.
KPK’s counsel Wan Muhamad Hafiz Wan Zawawi said the judgment is the decision from the defamation suit filed by the company against the statements published and spread by Husam (above) through Facebook and his ceramah sessions.
“Judge Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas described the statement as having damaged the reputation and image of KPK and negatively impacted the good name of their business,” the lawyer said in a statement yesterday.
In 2017, Husam, who was a senator at the time, accused KPK of violating Orang Asli’s rights by trespassing on their land in Gua Musang.
Husam also claimed that KPK had purportedly closed down and there were issues of irregularities in the company.
Following this, KPK had filed a defamation suit against Husam as the land that had been allegedly trespassed was not under KPK’s concession and the company had never closed down and is still operational today.
Previously, Husam had filed a motion to set aside and dismiss the 2019 judgment, but it was rejected by the court.
In that decision, the High Court in Kota Bharu had ruled in favour of KPK, but it did not set the amount Husam had to pay in compensation and costs.
Husam was represented by lawyers from the law firm Zayumi Murtadza & Co. - Mkini
