Adib committee: Senior pathologist appointed to examine coroner's decision

The government committee looking into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim has decided to appoint a senior pathologist to assist in investigations.

Among the pathologist's duties will be to examine the Coroner's Court ruling on the case, the findings of police investigations, and other areas relating to Adib's cause of death.

De facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (above), who announced the decision in a statement today, said the pathologist has been given a specific deadline to conclude their probe and come up with a detailed report.

It is not clear who the pathologist appointed was nor when the deadline is specifically.

However, Wan Junaidi said the committee will meet again in one month after receiving the pathologist's report.

Adib died at the National Heart Institute on Dec 17, 2018, after succumbing to injuries sustained while on duty during riots near the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya about a month earlier.

In September last year, coroner Rofiah Mohamad ruled that Adib's death was a criminal act perpetrated by two or three unidentified assailants during a riot outside the temple last November.

However, investigators have yet to be able to identify the alleged perpetrators.

The issue is a hot button topic and was heavily politicised by those now in BN and Perikatan Nasional.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob then moved to set up a committee to look into Adib's death.

Wan Junaidi leads the committee which also consists of Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin, Housing and Local Government Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Attorney-General Idrus Harun and Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

In his statement today, Wan Junaidi said the committee had met in Bukit Aman yesterday to discuss the case, going over the case facts and chronology.

"It is clear that this would not be an easy case to handle and requires various levels of investigations. That is why we decided to appoint a senior pathologist to assist us on this," he said. - Mkini
