Govt urged to set up task force on Indira Gandhi case too

Indira Gandhi filed a suit against the police last year, citing their inaction in executing the warrant against her ex-husband.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been urged to set up a task force to investigate the police’s inability to trace Indira Gandhi’s husband Muhammad Riduan Abdullah, who took their daughter away from her, even after 12 years.

A statement issued by her lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal said the task force to investigate police inefficiency should comprise former judges.

Their call follows the setting up of separate task forces by the government to investigate the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the Pulau Batu Puteh “scandal” and allegations of judicial interference made by former attorney-general Tommy Thomas.

“It is beyond reason that the police has made no progress in the last seven years since the Ipoh High Court Order in 2014,” they added.

The High Court in Ipoh issued a mandamus in 2014 compelling the police to search, retrieve and then reunite Indira with her daughter Prasana Diksa.

More recently, the High Court ordered a full trial for Indira’s suit against the police and the government for alleged inaction in executing a warrant of arrest against Riduan for contempt.

Indira filed her suit last year, citing police inaction in executing the warrant against Riduan. She is seeking damages and a declaration that the IGP had committed tort of nonfeasance in public office. - FMT
