Amanah assures consensus achieved on Harapan's Malacca CM candidate

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub assured that a consensus has been achieved on Pakatan Harapan’s chief ministerial candidate and an announcement will be made soon.

This was after DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng pushed the coalition to officially announce Amanah’s Adly Zahari as their chief ministerial candidate.

Salahuddin (above) said the Harapan presidential council had already arrived at a name and it was a matter of timing.

“It has been discussed, and we have reached an understanding. Just waiting to announce the name at the right time.

“Maybe it will be in one or two days after the nomination day. The presidential council will announce the decision,” he told Malaysiakini in an interview.

Earlier today, Lim said Harapan had committed “mistakes” with regard to accepting Umno defectors as election candidates and must not make another mistake with the chief ministerial candidate.

Adly, who served as the chief minister of the Harapan-led Malacca government from 2018 to 2020, is presumed to be the nominee.

He was ousted in March 2020 when the Harapan-led state government was toppled and Adly replaced by Umno’s Sulaiman Md Ali.

Some within Harapan are concerned if Adly is not formally announced as the official chief ministerial candidate, others who harbour ambitions may seek the top spot in the event Harapan wins or is faced with a hung state assembly.

Among them include Idris Haron, who defected from Umno to PKR and will be fielded in Asahan. He served as chief minister from 2013 to 2018.

Another possible contender is PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, who had since the 2018 general election been touted as a possible chief ministerial candidate.

He was defeated in Rim, paving the way for Adly to easily rise to the position of chief minister in 2018.

However, speculation of Shamsul rekindling his chief ministerial ambitions was reignited after he is set to be fielded in Paya Rumput even though he is already the Hang Tuah Jaya MP.

Adly, meanwhile, will defend his Bukit Katil seat.

Adly, who joined the interview with Salahuddin, downplayed the jostling for the Malacca chief ministerial position. The priority, he said, is to win first.

“If you ask me, I leave it to the Harapan presidential council to decide.

“For me, what is also important is how Harapan can get a majority and become the state government,” he told Malaysiakini.
