Who will head the next Melaka state government? A DAP strategist speculates on who Umno and PN will choose. (Bernama pic)

PETALING JAYA: With Pakatan Harapan torn between two rivals as potential candidates to be Melaka chief minister, a DAP strategist has turned the focus on the possible choice of the rival political coalitions.

Liew Chin Tong, the DAP political education director, called for live debates between the potential chief ministerial candidates, and said Adly Zahari of Amanah could represent Pakatan Harapan.

Adly’s name was raised yesterday by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng who urged coalition leaders to name Adly as the PH choice. An Amanah leader said the name could be announced within days of nominations today.

The Umno-led Barisan Nasional and the rival Perikatan Nasional coalition have remained silent on who will lead should they win the Melaka state elections on Nov 20.

Liew, in a posting on Sunday, said: “I wonder whether Sulaiman Md Ali or Rauf Yusoh is Umno’s choice. I am also wondering if Rafiq Naizamohideen or Mas Ermieyati Samsudin is the choice for Perikatan Nasional.”

Sulaiman, the former chief minister, is contesting in Lendu and Rauf, the former assembly speaker, in Tanjung Bidara, where he will clash with Mas Ermieyati of Bersatu, while her party comrade Rafiq is contesting in Telok Mas.

Liew said the ban on election campaigning ordered by the health ministry would make it tough on political parties to reach out to voters.

He urged the Election Commission to organise live debates between the rival chief ministerial candidates from the three coalitions.

Live debates on TV as well as digital platforms should also be held between candidates of key constituencies from all three coalitions, he said.

Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are contesting all 28 seats in the Melaka state assembly.

Nominations close today, and polling will be conducted on Nov 20. - FMT
