Jovetic at the double as Inter answer Mancini’s call
MILAN: Inter Milan bounced back from a midweek loss to Genoa and consolidated fourth in Serie A with a 3-1 defeat of Udinese on Saturday.
A double from Stevan Jovetic and an injury-time contribution from Brazilian Eder earned Roberto Mancini’s men all the points.
The result lifted them five points clear of Fiorentina in the battle for a Europea League spot and gave them fresh hope of securing third and a play-off spot for the Champions League.
But that looks a tall order with Inter four points adrift of Roma.
Mancini had urged his misfiring players to find the net after the 1-0 loss to Genoa and they duly answered his call.
But it was Udinese who took a ninth minute lead courtesy of the opening goal from Francais Cyril Thereau.
Jovetic cancelled that out in the 36th minute and the Montenegrin forward then put Inter into the lead with less than quarter of an hour remaining.
Eder assured the win in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
On Sunday, Italian champions Juventus will win a fifth ‘Scudetto’ if they beat Fiorentina away and Napoli fail to beat Roma in the Italian capital on Monday.
Given Juve were only a handful of points above the relegation zone and virtually ruled out of contention last October, it is an impressive turnaround for the team that Massimiliano Allegri took under his wing in the summer of 2014.
With Juventus virtually assured of the league crown, Napoli and Roma are still engaged in a close fight for the second automatic Champions League place.
And it could all come down to Monday’s clash at the Olimpico, where Gonzalo Higuain will make his long-awaited return for the visitors following a three-match suspension.
