Parisians fear long recovery as Seine river slowly recedes (VIDEO)
PARIS, June 6 — The flooded Seine river is dropping.
And the water levels are expected to continue to move lower.
Nearby Parisians are marvelling at the water level’s visible descent.
Paris resident, Viviane, says, “We can tell that the Seine has really receded, compared to yesterday. It receded a good amount, because yesterday for the car (in shot 8), we could only see the roof, now we can see the windshield. The river really receded.”
The wettest May in 100 years has flooded low-lying areas.
The Seine had peaked at 6.1 meters, or 20 feet, on Saturday before it began receding.
Firefighters were called in to pump more than a million gallons from the Porte de Bercy interchange.
As their five-hour operation gets underway, residents are looking ahead, with concern about the economic repercussion.
Longjumeau resident, Therese, says, “We need to wait for the water to be completely gone, and now the water has started receding, but we can’t completely clean up (the affected areas), that’s for sure. And there are people who still haven’t been able to come home. It’s unbelievable, it’s catastrophic. For the country’s economy it’s catastrophic.” — Reuters
