Gwen Stefani is the coolest troll in Trolls
In the new animated feature Trolls, singer Gwen Stefani voices the cool troll DJ Suki. The film not only features the infectious number Can’t Stop This Feeling by Justin Timberlake, but also a duet between Timberlake and Stefani.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Timberlake – who is the film’s musical director and the voice talent for the main male troll – said he just had to find a reason to do a song with Stefani. The former N’Sync member said: “She’s like the raddest chick on the planet.”
In the same interview, Anna Kendrick – who voices the lead female troll in Trolls – added: “We were both pretty geeky the day that she was there. I came in for a recording session and just caught the tail end of Gwen’s session, and I was like full-on saucer-eyed.”
Although Stefani has lent her voice on a lot of soundtracks, she has done very little acting – she played Jean Harlow in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator (2004), and appeared as herself in Zoolander and in an episode of TV show Gossip Girl. The 46-year-old star once told MTV News that she finds acting a lot different than singing.
“It’s not as theatrical, it’s a lot more subtle, and that’s a lot harder. Simpler is usually harder. So I would love to do more.”
Trolls tells the story of happy Poppy (Kendrick) setting out on an adventure with the grumpy Branch (Timberlake) to save the trolls kidnapped by baddies known as Bergens. Along the way, the trolls sing a lot of familiar songs including Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors. Trolls is scheduled to open on Oct 27.
