A vocal aide to the prime minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor has questioned electoral reform coalition Bersih’s non-partisanship concerning opposition leaders.
Rizal Mansor in a Facebook posting claimed Bersih proved itself “not Bersih” (not clean) when they asked DAP secretary-general and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to launch the Bersih 5 convoy in Penang a fortnight ago.
“This is despite many calling for Lim Guan Eng to step down if he was charged for corruption, including (Hakam chairperson) Ambiga (Sreenivasan) and (DAP national publicity secretary) Tony Pua earlier, but yet he is still holding on to his elected office,” said Rizal.
Lim on June 20 pleaded not guilty to two charges of corruption over alleged abuse of power in relations to obtaining a bungalow from businesswoman Phang Li Koon at below market value and an application to redone s piece of land.
Referring to speeches made during the finale of the Bersih 4 rally last year, Rizal questioned whether speakers’ calls for the people to reject Umno would be considered political and partisan.
“As Bersih is clearly political and partisan, it is wise for all religious leaders – including a certain bishops in the news – to refrain from joining or openly asking others to join Bersih’s activities,” he said.
He was likely referring to Malacca and Johor Catholic diocese bishop Bernard Paul, who in a Facebook posting on Thursday urged the people to join the Bersih 5 rally and be a part of history.
