The Rise Of China-Russia – Turkey’s Turn To Shift Alliance To Shanghai Five

Russia is a military powerhouse. China is an economic powerhouse. When both Russia and China works together, they become the world’s superpower – more powerful than the United States. Both nations, however, have become so powerful today primarily due to weaknesses of America and European Union.

United States have been interfering into other nations’ internal affairs too much that they’re running out of country to start a new war. European Union have been experimenting liberalism and multi-culturalism too much that they’ve lost Britain and have no idea how to solve domestic terrorism problem they started in the first place.

Brexit - UK Abandon EU Sinking Ship

While the US and EU was busy debating about human rights, global warming and the need to import Syrian refugees, Russia and China quietly flex their muscles – the annexation of Crimea by Moscow and the militarization of Spratly Islands in South China Sea by China. Despite all the “evil” things that Russia and China have done, more and more nations want to befriend them.

Even after an international tribunal ruled that China couldn’t claim historic rights in all the waters within a “nine-dash” line used by Beijing to delineate its South China Sea claims, the same country that brought China to the international court – Philippines – has chosen to get rid of US and befriends the supposedly evil China. Malaysia has also followed Philippines’ footstep and is sucking up to Beijing.

Like the case of South China Sea, nobody, including the mighty US, dares to fire a single shot at Russia for Crimea’s invasion. Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Francois Hollande, Mark Rutte and Matteo Renzi had proven to be merely toothless tigers when they couldn’t do anything but criticized and condemned Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping’s naughtiness.

If the arrogant and complacent leaders of US and EU hadn’t over-promoted their beliefs, the issues such as terrorism, refugees and migrants might not have triggered the Brexit and subsequently Brexit 2.0 – the presidency of Donald Trump. Now Brexit 3.0 could happen in France and when that materializes, the EU will eventually break up.

After Donald Trump made a stunning win over highly popular Hillary Clinton, the EU is having cold sweat over possibility that France’s National Front leader – Marine Le Pen – could pull another unexpected victory to become the nation’s next president. But before that could happen, EU is slapped with another problem. Turkey has a change of heart and is toying with the idea of aligning itself with China-Russia.

A NATO member, it would be a huge humiliation to the West if Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan decides to join the “Shanghai Five” club. After 11 years of fruitless negotiations, Turkey said it was sick and tired of waiting. Of course, Erdogan could be playing poker but looking at how messy the EU is, it won’t be a surprise if eventually Turkey shifts its alliance to the other bloc.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkey formally applied to become an EU member in 1987 although negotiations only began in 2005. But following Ankara’s crackdown after an attempted coup, the process of admitting Turkey into EU has become complicated. Some European parliamentarians have even backed calls for membership talks with Ankara to be halted.

Shanghai Five was formed in Shanghai in1996 with China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as its original members. After the inclusion of Uzbekistan in 2001, the members renamed the organisation as Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The bloc is attractive to Tayyip Erdogan because human rights, a factor blocking Turkey’s entry into EU, aren’t welcomed.

In fact, the SCO or simply Shanghai Five was formed to ensure that liberal democracy could not gain ground in these countries. The members have also agreed to “oppose intervention in other countries” internal affairs on the pretexts of “humanitarianism” and “protecting human rights”. It’s a perfect match for President Tayyip Erdogan’s authoritarian rule.

However, it would be interesting to see if China and Russia would accept Turkey’s membership considering SCO is also a regional security bloc formed to fight threats posed by radical Islam. Since he took over as president in 2014, Erdogan has abandoned Turkey’s traditional pragmatism in favour of an Islamist ideological agenda – leading to radicalization of Turkish society.

ISIS Oil Trucks Bombed - Putin - Erdogan

It was Russia who had accused Recep Tayyip Erdogan of running a “family business” after his son Bilal Erdogan and son-in-law Berat Albayrak have allegedly been linked to smuggling ISIS oil. After a Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24M attack aircraft, the Kremlin had published satellite images, which it claims show trucks carrying ISIS oil entering Turkey.

Still, in an effort to frustrate the United States and NATO alliance, China is reportedly willing to consider any application from NATO-member Turkey to join the Shanghai Five club. Turkey could become a nice weapon as the country could open the floodgate and allow uncontrollable flow of Syrian refugees / migrants into the EU, and bring along terrorists in the process.
