Meet the Japanese Teen Who Runs Faster Than Usain Bolt

Like a bolt from the blue, Abdul Hakim Sani Brown has zoomed his way across the finish line and into history books, completing the London IAAF World Championships men’s 200m in a record-setting 20.43 seconds.

Brown, born to a Ghanian father and Japanese mother, set this record during his race on August 9. He is also the youngest-ever finalist in the men’s 200m, a mere 198 days younger than the athlete who previously set the record — none other than Usain Bolt.

Bolt, hailing from Jamaica, set the previous record at the 2005 championships in Finland.

This would not be the first time Brown beat one of Bolt’s records; dubbed “the next Usain Bolt”, Brown previously won the 100 meters at the 2015 World Youth Championships in Athletics, setting a new record of 10.28 in the final.

The recent victory felt short-lived, however. On August 11, Brown would take seventh overall during the men’s 200m final, crossing the finish line at 20.63 seconds. Japanese delegation team manager, Koji Ito, later revealed that Brown had sustained an injury to his right leg and would not be competing in the 4×100 relay race.
