AFRAID OF DREDGING UP THE UGLY TRUTH ABOUT NAJIB & HADI? COPS YET TO PROBE AMBIGA DESPITE BEING NAMED AS SOURCE FOR RM90MIL BRIBE ALLEGATION
Former Malaysian Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan said police have yet to meet her, three months after announcing that they would be investigating her for “causing public alarm”.
The police had announced their intentions to probe Ambiga after she was named by Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown as the source for an article that said PAS received some RM90 million from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
“It’s been more than two months and they have not reached or contacted me,” she told reporters on the sidelines of senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s appeal of his suit against the Malaysian Bar and two others.
She said that she is prepared to assist police investigations if needed.
It was reported that on Nov 1, Umno grassroots movement chairperson Zulkarnain Mahdar had lodged a police report against Ambiga following the revelation made in Rewcastle-Brown’s (photo) defence against the suit filed by PAS in the UK.
Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun was quoted as saying on Nov 11 that they would probe Ambiga to obtain her statement.
The Bar Council and Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah had then complained that the report and police investigations would amount to acts of harassment or intimidation.
However, Fuzi had dismissed such suggestions by the Bar.
“We don’t want to comment on what the Bar Council said.
‘What’s important is that there were police reports lodged, I think two police reports have been lodged so we have to open investigations,” said Fuzi, who also confirmed then that Ambiga had yet to be called.
It was reported that the investigations on Ambiga had been classified under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for causing public alarm.
Section 505(b) of the Penal Code penalises those who make, publish or circulate any statement, rumour or report with the intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public.
It is also meant to apply to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the state or against public tranquility.
