Chandra reflects on May 9 unity at interfaith buka puasa

At an interfaith breaking fast event hosted by Yayasan 1Malaysia and Assumption Church yesterday, the church and foundation members, amongst others, gathered to celebrate their diversity of faiths and ethnic backgrounds.
Among those of in attendance was prominent activist and academic, Dr Chandra Muzaffar, who is also the Yayasan 1Malaysia chairperson.
Speaking at a forum before the breaking of fast, Chandra noted that Malaysians sharing similar values despite their religious and ethnic differences brought about change at the May 9 general election.
“On the 9th of May, Malaysians expressed their feelings about honesty and integrity; that is the inner meaning of the election results – that we will not accept dishonesty, we will not accept lying and we will not accept deception.
"We want honesty, we want truthfulness and we want trustworthiness," he said.
Speaking to Malaysiakini after the forum, Chandra added that while the post-election atmosphere is “quite encouraging”, there is no guarantee that this will last as there are people who may try to disrupt such Malaysian unity.
When asked if he had any specific groups in mind, Chandra replied in the negative but blamed the exclusive mentality in religions for separating citizens.
“Whatever our ethnic backgrounds, we are all Malaysian citizens.
“We talk about the two important ingredients to citizenship, that is rights and responsibilities. And they go hand in hand. With the right of free speech, for example, you don’t tell lies.
“By all means stand up for your rights but be aware of your responsibilities to others,” he said.
The breaking fast event and interreligious forum at Assumption Church was preceded by a bubur lambuk cooking program, which Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah attended.
Maria, alongside participants of the program, helped cook the Ramadan delicacy to offer to pedestrians outside the Assunta Satu Kebangsaan School.
Yayasan 1Malaysia has been organising programs of this integrative nature for the last 9 years.
Last week, Yayasan 1Malaysia, along with three other non-profits, including Assumption Church, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz Petaling Jaya and Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya, joined forces for a similar bubur lambuk distribution and buka puasa event at Masjid Jamek. -Mkini
