Harapan MP: Why aren't the ministers visiting site of riot?

Kampar MP Thomas Su has questioned why cabinet ministers had failed to visit the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya after the first riot broke out on Monday morning.

"So far, they only gave press statements. Last night, the deputy home minister was there. The public's perception is that we are slow in handling this," said Su when met in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said he has been receiving complaints from the public about the government's apparent slow reaction to the chain of events.

At the time of writing, the sole cabinet minister to visit the temple was Local Government and Housing Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, who arrived at mid-day today.

Yesterday, a group of ethnic Indian cabinet ministers issued a press statement condemning the violence and also the police for initially claiming that the riot involved two groups of ethnic Indians.

Su told reporters that the cabinet members must be seen to be handling things on the ground and engaging the temple authorities.

"Now, things has escalated and a rescue personnel was critical injured. People are asking us why we are not taking action fast enough," he said.

A riot broke out after the temple was attacked by a group of thugs wearing masks on Monday morning.

Last night, thousands gathered near the temple in a show of support. However, there were violence after midnight with vehicles set on fire and property destroyed.

The fire and rescue department which arrived to douse the fire found themselves being assaulted by a mob.

One rescuer, Muhammad Adib Muhammad Kassim, 24, was dragged out of his van and assaulted. He is currently under intensive care.  - Mkini
