Kok rubbishes rumours, says not related to developer in temple issue

PETALING JAYA: Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok today clarified that she is not related to the developer involved in the relocation of a Hindu temple in Subang Jaya, which has seen a scuffle and a heated protest in the past two days.

“Please stop dragging me into the fiasco of the Hindu temple in USJ. I am not related to the developer and I have nothing to do with the project,” Kok, who is also Seputeh MP, tweeted earlier this afternoon.

She posted a screenshot of a Facebook post which read: “The developer is Teresa Kok’s relative? That’s why our good ministers can’t open their mouth, especially our Kulasegaran?” referring to the human resources minister.

A second attachment, both of which have been edited with the words, “Palsu”, or false, in capital letters, shows Kok with two men, believed to be linked to One City, the developer who owns the land on which the temple sits.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, Kok asked why “irresponsible people” were dragging her into the “fiasco” surrounding the relocation of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple near the USJ exit of the Elite highway and USJ 16 and USJ 21.

The DAP leader pointed out that she was not an elected representative in Selangor, and reiterated she had nothing to do with the matter. She urged netizens not to continue defaming her as well.

The temple in question had been slated for relocation on Nov 22 as part of a win-win solution involving the developer One City, the Selangor state government and two claimants to the temple management, K Chellapa and M Nagaraju.

However, a rival faction of the temple has insisted that the temple remain at its present location instead of being relocated some 3km away despite agreeing to a consent judgment on the issue in 2014. They claim the judgment had been breached.

On Nov 23, One City denied agreeing to postpone the relocation to Nov 29, saying the final date for the temple occupants to vacate the land remained Nov 22, as per the writ of possession from the High Court.

In the wee hours of this morning, a 1000-man strong peaceful protest at the temple premises turned unruly when a car was set on fire. Protesters also charged at fire and rescue trucks and vandalised police cars and other vehicles on site.

Despite a strong presence of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), the unruly crowd later headed towards the office of the developer of One City, located some 500 meters away. There, they pelted it with rocks and smashed the glass doors and windows.

One City has yet to respond to this.

Members of the press were also threatened in the incident while a fireman was assaulted.

Yesterday, an early morning scuffle took place between the devotees holding a vigil at the temple and a second group of non-Hindus, which saw at least 23 cars burned and members of the second group storming the temple grounds and attacking the devotees.

21 people have been detained so far in connection with yesterday’s incident. -FMT
