’Social Justice’ Author Faces Backlash Over Tweets Attacking Marie Kondo for Not Speaking English
American author and political activist Barbara Ehrenreich is facing backlash for attacking Marie Kondo in a now-deleted tweet.
Ehrenreich, the author behind best-sellers such as “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America” and “Bait and Switch: The Pursuit of the American Dream,” has commonly explored themes of social justice, women’s rights and poverty.
Ironically, the American author was somehow unable to see her own ignorance in her series of tweets criticizing the organizational guru’s choice in speaking Japanese in the show, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.”
The initial tweet posted on Monday at 11:05 a.m. stated, “I will be convinced that America is not in decline only when our de-cluttering guru Marie Kondo learns to speak English,” and has since been deleted.
I assume Barbara Ehrenreich will delete this racist/xenophobic tweet but let’s not forget that even otherwise “progressive” white folks have a huge capacity for racism. pic.twitter.com/s8BmMmFcBt

Following the immediate backlash from Twitter users who called out Ehrenreich on her blatant xenophobia, the author responded with another tweet which read:
“I confess: I hate Marie Kondo because, aesthetically speaking, I’m on the side of clutter. As for her language: It’s OK with me that she doesn’t speak English to her huge American audience but it does suggest that America is in decline as a superpower.”

Unsurprisingly, her follow-up tweet did little to help her case.
I like how you deleted the first racist tweet and followed up with another racist tweet but this time with imperialism.

🙄 Cue lonely old woman in tattered house robe who hoards cats and shakes fists at immigrant neighbors.
Also, Japan carries $1.14 billion of American debt.

Your skull is remarkably uncluttered yet it sparks no joy.

Ehrenreich went on to issue an apology on Twitter following the second wave of backlash, claiming that her comments on Marie Kondo were simply her attempts at “subtle humor”.
Sorry to anyone offended by my tweet about Marie Kondo! Sometimes my attempts at subtle humor just don’t work.
— Barbara Ehrenreich (@B_Ehrenreich) February 4, 2019
Needless to say, the non-apology was largely unsuccessful.
Nothing you said, both times, was funny.
Shut up.

You can see Ralph Northam’s racism but you don’t seem to be able to see your own. That’s a big problem.

Lol. If that’s subtle humour, what’s your unsubtle humour, just straight up racial slurs and the wonders of imperialism? If you’re not gonna actually apologize, at least don’t throw out half-assed nonpologies…
