PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is fortunate to be free of major terror-related incidents, thanks to its terrorism intelligence, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In light of the Christchurch terror attack, the Prime Minister said terrorism could occur in any way and it could not be dealt with through conventional methods.
“Terrorism has no borders, we cannot know where they (terrorists) will strike. You cannot fight terrorism like you fight a conventional war.
“The best way to treat terrorism is to understand why they terrorise, and then you try to remove the reason for terrorism. So we cannot guarantee that they will not appear here or there. But Malaysia has been fortunate because our intelligence is good. We know who they are, we know their movements.
“We have arrested some and have tried to re-educate them,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here during a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia event.
In a Facebook posting earlier, Dr Mahathir said he regretted the incident and hoped that the New Zealand government would arrest the culprits.
He added that the government would do everything possible to see that Malaysians there were safe.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of the shooting incidents.”- Star
