Another 'Shocker' Of A Book - By A Sheikh of Al Azhar University Turned 'Agnostic' ?

Here is something someone sent to me yesterday. (Thank you).  This is a new book, the PDF link is here :

Hope the link works.

"My ordeal with the Quran and god in the Quran"    is a relatively new book, originally written in Arabic - first "not allowed" to be published in Egypt and other Arab countries in 2004.

In 2016 the English translation was published in the UK (where else).

The writer Abbas Abdul Noor is an Egyptian religious scholar, who studied at the Faculty of Theology at Al Azhar University for three years. He completed his fourth year at the University of Fuad I. He was then awarded a scholarship from the Department of Islamic Endowments, Egypt to study in Paris at the Sorbonne, where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy.

Here is more intro about the Author.

Abbas Abdul Noor was born in Damanhur in 1927. He was a Sufi Sheikh, a pious Muslim of the Sunni creed, a jurist, and a principal of a Sufi lodge (ةّ تكي ).

He inherited knowledge of the religion from his forefathers and ancestors, who were recognised for their piety, strength of doctrine, and righteousness. In his city, he led his followers (murids/religious pupils of a Sufi path) upon the path of true faith and devotion to worship.

As a young man, he enrolled in the Faculty of Theology at Al Azhar, where he studied for three years. He decided to complete the fourth year at the University of Fuad I, where he studied under intellectual titans such as Abdel Rahman Badawi, Zaki Naguib Mahmoud, Muhammed Abdul Hadi Abu Reeda, Ahmad Fuad Al Ahwani, Yusuf Murad, and others.

After completing his degree, he was awarded a scholarship from the Department of Islamic Endowments to study in Paris at the Sorbonne, where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy.

When he returned to his city, he resumed his religious endeavours, and became a preacher, imam, and a speaker in one of its mosques. He then persevered at the local university, teaching and writing erudite philosophical books.

He produced a number of publications concerning philosophical, Islamic, and Arabic thought. His works have been reprinted several times in Cairo and Beirut.

After he retired, he devoted himself to writing and research in various fields of philosophy, literature, and religion.  But his intellectual life was not without worries, nor was his religious life free of doubts.

It is true that he grew up in a pious devout household. Yet he still had misgivings, feelings of inner turmoil, and endless questions. His mind was raising provocative subjects, but his faith struggled to answer every dilemma.

For Abbas, the conflict between science and religion had started early. It was a conflict that he was unable to make public. If he hadn’t had to suppress this conflict when it first arose, he would not have reached the degree of indignation that he expresses in this  My Ordeal with the Qur’an and God in the Qur’an.

OSTB :  The translator says that (because of the fear of repercussions) Abbas Abdul Noor may not be the real name of the writer.

Well neither is Abu Hurairah. As most Muslims do not know  Abu Hurairah is also not the real name of Abu Hurairah. No one really knows the true name of Abu Hurairah. Yet Salafis and Sunnis believe in the the largest number of hadith in the Bukhari collection that are attributed to Abu Hurairah, which is not his real name.

Anyway,  a book is just a book.  Words inside books cannot harm anyone. Do not be afraid of books ok. If you are afraid of books there is something seriously wrong with you.

The front pages of the book provide Facebook links to some 'Muslim' agnostic pages, linked to the translator and author?

The dictionary says an agnostic "is a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God."

Really? I see another oxymoron here. Just on the logic alone : if it does not exist, then how did anyone know about it in the first place?

Anyway - myy views about the book?  I have read parts of it.  I have some issues with the book. For me its not advanced enough. Ha ha ha. Some of his ideas are still old fashioned. Stuck in time.

You must follow the Quran very closely. Stay close to the Quran.
