Guan Eng gets flak from Bung over Sandakan projects

PETALING JAYA: Umno has thrown another brickbat at Pakatan Harapan (PH) after Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng responded to Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin’s criticism of his announcement of development projects for Sandakan.
Speaking to FMT, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin said it was common knowledge that the two projects Khairy mentioned – the Sandakan airport upgrade and the Sungai Anip flood mitigation works – were already in the pipeline when Barisan Nasional (BN) was in power.
He alleged that PH initially decided against pursuing the two projects when it came to power but was now resuming them in its bid for victory in the Sandakan by-election.
On Tuesday, hours after Lim announced 49 projects for Sandakan costing RM2.8 billion, Khairy said in a Facebook posting that the airport and flood mitigation projects were already in the 11th Malaysia Plan, which was approved in 2015.
Yesterday, speaking in Sandakan, Lim gave this retort: “Why were these projects not implemented during BN’s time? That has always been the question mark. They know how to talk but not carry out the work.”
Bung recalled that the PH administration once said it had “no money left” to proceed with some development projects.
“Surprisingly,” he said, “now that there’s a by-election, Lim has RM2.8 billion for the people of Sandakan. Is this an act of fishing for votes?
“Whatever it is, the people of Sandakan know what to do and they know very well that PH has failed to carry out its election promise to reduce the cost of living.”
Bung also criticised Bersih 2.0 for refusing to reprimand Lim.
On Tuesday, Bersih chairman Thomas Fann said the finance minister’s “boast” about PH’s successes did not count as an election offence.
Bung said Bersih was no longer the Bersih the public knew when BN was in power.
The Sandakan parliamentary seat became vacant on March 28 with the death of DAP’s Stephen Wong. His daughter, Vivian, is PH’s candidate in the May 11 by-election.
Nomination day is tomorrow. - FMT
