Man Drives a ‘Mario Kart’ Over Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge, Still on the Run From Police
A real-life “Mario Kart” that sped down a restricted highway and over the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo is now being chased by local authorities.
According to TBS News, the rented go-kart was spotted racing along the Metropolitan Expressway in Odaiba, an artificial island in Tokyo Bay, around 9 p.m. on Sunday.
A clerk stationed at the expressway’s toll gate reported the incident to the police, who shortly deployed a patrol car in response.
Unfortunately for them, the rogue kart driver already crossed over the connecting Rainbow Bridge and disappeared without a trace.
Renting go-karts is a thriving business in Tokyo, with drivers reportedly permitted on designated roads without helmets and seat belts for up to 60 kilometers (37.28 miles) per hour.
However, some roads are simply off-limits, including expressways.
Karts are especially popular among foreign tourists, who are able to drive them with International Driving Permits (IDPs).
Interestingly, karts entering the Metropolitan Expressway have recently increased, with foreigners being spotted there in January and March, TV Asahi News reported.
Local authorities are still investigating the incident based on surveillance videos. They also warned the public to avoid entering the expressways with their go-karts.
