Some voters still think I’m Umno president, says Mahathir
PUTRAJAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad is going to Tanjung Piai to campaign for the Pakatan Harapan candidate in the by-election there because some voters still think he is president of Umno.
Mahathir said he would go to the ground and campaign on Wednesday, and hoped they would have changed their views by then, Bernama reported.
“This, we have to face. I’m no longer UMNO president. I am now Bersatu chairman and Pakatan Harapan Prime Minister. “I’ll go to the ground to campaign this Wednesday and hope by then they no longer regard me as Umno president,” he said today.
Mahathir was president of Umno from 1981 to 2003. He left the party in 2017 to form PPBM.
Asked whether his presence in the Tanjung Piai by-election campaign would be a crowd puller to get the locals to attend PH ceramah, Mahathir said: “I don’t know, we’ll see the day after tomorrow”.
He said PPBM is confident of winning the by-election, with signs that many voters who had supported the Barisan Nasional in the 2018 general election now supporting PH.
“We are aware of the problems there (Tanjung Piai), we believe we can address the problems,” he told reporters after chairing a party leadership meeting here today.
Polling will be held on Saturday to fill a vacancy created by the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik on Sept 21 due to heart complications.
