PPBM pledges to boost cooperation with PAS after Perak crisis

PPBM secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin says the party is disappointed with Umno over the confidence motion in the Perak state assembly.

PETALING JAYA: PPBM is to strengthen cooperation with PAS, its ally in Perikatan Nasional, even as Umno pushes for its assemblyman to lead a new state government in Perak.

In a statement tonight, PPBM secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin reiterated the party’s disappointment with Umno for not supporting a motion of confidence in Ahmad Faizal Azumu, PPBM’s deputy president who was then menteri besar of Perak.

Faizal had led a Perikatan Nasional government, supported by Umno. However, he lost the confidence vote by 48-10 and his government resigned on Saturday.

Hamzah said that in the wake of the confidence motion, the PPBM supreme council had unanimously agreed at a meeting tonight “to strengthen its cooperation with PAS through Perikatan Nasional to ensure stability at the national and state level”.

He also said that any decision PPBM makes regarding the formation of the new state government in Perak will take into account the views of its allies in PN especially, PAS.

The PPBM statement came hours after the Umno supreme council decided that Perikatan Nasional would continue to form the new state government, after days of speculation that Umno might link up with parties in the opposition Pakatan Harapan.

Umno is expected to propose the party’s state chairman Saarani Mohamad as the next menteri besar, and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is expted to have an audience with the Perak ruler, Sultan Nazrin Shah tomorrow.

However the party has only 25 seats in the state assembly, five short of a majority. PPBM and its ally PAS have eight. The opposition Pakatan Harapan holds 24 seats. - FMT
