KJ bids farewell to 'crown jewel' PPV, boosters delegated to clinics
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin bade farewell to the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) vaccination centre (PPV) last night as it closed its doors for the last time.
He said the government will start to close PPVs when it is satisfied that an area has achieved a decent rate of those who are fully vaccinated.
“We no longer need to have such a large PPV in operation because this involves costs and so on, so when we are satisfied that an area has achieved a pretty good coverage, we still start to close PPVs.
“Large PPVs like this have already achieved their objective and today we close this PPV that has given out the most vaccinations in Malaysia,” Khairy said.
Describing the WTCKL PPV as the “crown jewel” of PPVs, he said it has administered the most Covid-19 vaccine doses in the country, doling out 18,000 doses a day at its peak.
While the Health Ministry is in the midst of discussion with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) about closing down PPVs in stages, Khairy said there will be some new ones being opened for adolescent vaccinations.
However, he noted that most adolescent vaccinations take place in schools.
Meanwhile, for booster shots in the future, he said they will be administered at both private clinics and government clinics.
Death of students already explained
Addressing viral claims that several students have died after getting their Covid-19 vaccinations, Khairy said the ministry has not received any reports of any serious side effects from the vaccine among adolescents.
“All that has been explained,” he said.
Perak police had previously explained that the deaths of two students in Ipoh were unrelated to the vaccination, as one female student had died on Aug 18 while a male student had died on Sept 17. Adolescent vaccinations only started on Sept 20.
The police also said the female student, who had diabetes and high blood pressure, was positive for Covid-19 and in critical condition at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for two months.
Meanwhile, the male student died from a heart attack, the police said.
On a separate issue, Khairy said his ministry is looking into resolving the issues faced by participants of the Phase 3 clinical trial last January for a Covid-19 vaccine developed by the Institute of Medical Biology Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (Imbcams).
“We are addressing the matter. We will allow them to be vaccinated,” he said.
Some 3,000 volunteers had participated in the Imbcams vaccine trial, where half received the vaccine while the remaining half received placebos.
As part of the trial, volunteers do not know who received the vaccination and who received the placebos.
The volunteers have since implored the government to update their vaccination status on their MySejahtera app.
Some have also urged the government to vaccinate the volunteers who only received the placebos. - Mkini
