Malaccans in neighbouring countries can now vote by post

Malaccans living abroad near the Malaysian border can now register to be postal voters.

Rules preventing voters in neighbouring countries from casting postal ballots have been rescinded via a gazette on Oct 18.

Likewise, a rule preventing Malaysians abroad who had been in the country for at least 30 days in the five years before an election has also been removed.

Curiously, however, the gazette is specific for the Malacca snap election.

This means that a new gazette would be needed the next time there is an election if these rules are to be applied.

Previously, Malaysians living in southern Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, and Kalimantan, Indonesia did not qualify for postal voting.

Those who want to register to be a postal voter in the Malacca election can follow the Election Commission’s instructions here.

Campaigning for the Malacca election will start on Nov 8, with polling on Nov 20.

Postal votes must arrive by the end of polling at the latest. - Mkini
