Speculation emerges Sarawak legislature will be dissolved Thursday
The Sarawak state legislative assembly may be dissolved tomorrow (Oct 21), according to a report.
Citing sources, Sarawak-based media Borneo Post said the dissolution was a "real possibility".
The paper's sources also claimed that polls could tentatively be held on Nov 27 with the nomination on Nov 13.
This would overlap with the Malacca polls which are being held on Nov 20 with the nomination on Nov 8.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is also reportedly expected to make an official visit to the state this weekend.
Previously, there was speculation that the Sarawak and Malacca polls would be held concurrently.
Sarawak emergency to end?
De facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had said that the localised emergency in Sarawak could be lifted earlier.
Lifting the emergency would automatically dissolve the state assembly - whose term expired in June.
The emergency - which is slated to end in February next year - was declared to delay the state election amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
As of yesterday, 90.8 percent of Sarawak adults have been fully vaccinated.
Booster shots are also being rolled out to senior citizens in the state.
Sarawak had struggled with four-digit Covid-19 cases last month but numbers have been on a downtrend since Oct 16. - Mkini
