‘Fracas at Parliament grounds nothing to do with Umno’

KUALA LUMPUR: The commotion which occurred in the compound of the Parliament building yesterday had nothing to do with Umno, said party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He said the party leadership also did not issue any instruction on an incident which involved Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad.

“Umno does not condone any action that leads to fights or brawls,” he said in a statement here today.

Nevertheless, Tengku Adnan said Umno viewed seriously the use of offensive words and name-calling by parliamentary members to an extent that such action could draw the ire of other parliamentary members.

Umno opposed such an act, which is regarded as irrational and immature, as well as contradicts the ethics of an elected representative, he added.

In the incident, Khalid was reported to have been confronted by a group of people but was saved from physical harm by Parliament security officers.

Police have so far detained 11 people to assist in investigations into the incident.
