Dr Mahathir Mohamad has challenged Defence Minister and Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein to contest for the Langkawi parliament seat in the coming general election.

This is after Hishammuddin dared the former premier to stand for the Pekan seat in Pahang, whose incumbent is Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Speaking at a press conference in Parliament this afternoon, Mahathir claimed Pekan is a kawasan hantu raya (an area with ghosts) and not a kawasan pilihanraya(an election area).

He said this is because the number of voters kept changing in the constituency, alluding to the presence of phantom voters.

“There is something odd with regard to Pekan. At one time, his voters were 35,000… When there was another election, his voters rose to 80,000. Don’t know where (these voters came from)…”, he said.

However, it is unclear which elections the former premier was referring to since Najib has been the MP for Pekan since 1976 after replacing his late father, second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein.

During the last election, he defeated his challenger from PKR with a majority of 35,613 votes, up from 26,464 votes in the 2008 general election.

Over the weekend, Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairperson, said he was not ruling out the possibility of contesting in Pekan.
Hishammuddin, who described it as a populist statement, challenged his former boss to stand against Najib.

The minister, who is Najib’s cousin, vowed that the entire BN leadership would be present in Pekan to defend the prime minister.

On another matter, Mahathir responded to Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi, who volunteered to debate with the former premier at the Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum instead of Najib.

Mahathir, however, urged Puad to advise Najib not to fear an old man.

“No need to help his boss. Go tell his boss not to be afraid instead. It’s not like this old man can do anything to him (Najib).

“He (Najib) is 62-years-old (sic). I’m 92. Is he still afraid?” he said.
