Mukhriz: Raids expected, harassment will continue

Parti Pribumi Malaysia Bersatu (Bersatu) deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir is not surprised that the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) raided companies belonging to him and his brothers.

"We expected this," he told reporters in Parliament this afternoon.

Mukhriz claimed that the raids were politically motivated and expected the "harassment" towards his family to continue.

However, the son of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he and his brothers, Mokhzani and Mirzan, would cooperate with the IRB.

"I think those guys are doing a professional job. They are taking instructions from people who have a political interest.

"... I expect we have to submit some documents to fulfil the requirements such as tax declaration documents," he added.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that firms linked to the three brothers were raided by the IRB on Tuesday.

Zahid's wealth 

Meanwhile, Mahathir, who was also in Parliament, welcomed the raids, saying that more such searches should be conducted by the authorities.

The Pakatan Harapan chairperson also urged the authorities to probe Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, his wife, son and son-in-law as well as his cousin, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

On Sunday, Hishammuddin had urged the authorities to probe Mahathir and his children, saying the former premier was no angel when he was in power.

The IRB raids came in the wake of Mahathir claiming that Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi failed to provide a clear answer on the RM230 million in his bank account.

Mahathir said this happened in 1996 when Zahid declared his assets to the former premier after winning the Umno Youth chief post.

Zahid said he is willing to be investigated over this allegation. He also claimed that his wealth was accumulated when he was in the private sector. - Mkini
