GEORGE TOWN: PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim today hit out at critics over his recent meetings with several heads of state, saying he was merely obeying the palaces’ orders to meet with the sultans.
In an interview carried live on Invoke’s Facebook, he said he had met the sultans as a Malaysian who practised the principle of parliamentary democracy.
He also said the meetings were an important step to maintaining good relations between the palaces and the new government.
“For instance, I went to see the different sultans in Johor, Selangor, Pahang and Perak. You see, after 60 years, the constitutional monarch is facing a change in government.
“The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government was set up amid strong propaganda that it was led by DAP, which would erode the powers of the monarch and the Malays. So I was there to tell them that the honour and sovereignty of the sultans will be upheld.”
Labelling the criticism against him as “evil whispers and slander”, he added that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had known of all his meetings with the sultans.
“When I had an audience with the King, I reported to Mahathir because he is the prime minister.
“When I was asked to meet the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, I informed Mahathir. When I had a meeting with the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin, I also informed Mahathir.
“So why are others being busybodies? Give me space to move. I move as someone who is helping the government out,” he said.
Anwar was responding to individuals such as former information minister Zainuddin Maidin who had questioned his meetings with the sultans.
He also refuted claims that he had not been firm enough in defending PH’s choice of attorney-general in the issue which has come to an impasse following what is perceived as the palace’s reluctance to accept a non-Malay candidate.
“I had business to attend to. I was working towards diffusing the tension,” he said. -FMT
