Daim: I met Anwar in prison many times to discuss toppling of Najib gov't

Anwar Ibrahim had always been highly critical of Daim Zainuddin in the past, accusing the latter of grand corruption and being one of the “master conspirators” behind his downfall in 1999.

Speaking to Malaysiakini after his release from prison on May 16, the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader said while the former finance minister could contribute to the nation, he must be mindful of his past scandals.

In an interview with the Star published today, Daim was asked about his relationship with Anwar given their acrimonious past.

“We have always been friends but politics is different. Anwar and I have known each other for a long time,” he said.

Daim also mentioned he had met Anwar in prison numerous times, prior to the latter's release on May 16.

“We discussed how to topple the previous government and with the support of the rakyat, we succeeded. We must stay united and deliver our promises to them,” he added.

On whether Anwar would make a good prime minister, Daim pointed out that the former had served in various ministries and held the post of deputy prime minister prior to his sacking in 1998.

“But nobody can rule the country alone. That would be a dictatorship. What you need is a good Cabinet, good advisers and good civil servants, honest and with integrity,” he added.

Prior to the 14th general election, it was said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad would hand over the reins to Anwar in two years.

Since then, Mahathir, 92, has indicated that the time frame could be flexible.

Quizzed on this, Daim cited Mahathir's interview with the Financial Times where he said that it would be difficult for him to remain as prime minister beyond the age of 95.

“But for now, I think everyone knows that he is committed to fulfilling the promises in Harapan's manifesto.

“After all, he is the chairperson of Harapan.

“Above all, his greatest achievement is that the rakyat put their trust in him and have given him their support to get rid of Najib (Abdul Razak) and his kleptocracy government,” he added. - Mkini
