Daim: Be patient with Harapan leaders' 'opposition-like' remarks

Daim Zainuddin has asked Malaysians to give Pakatan Harapan leaders who lack the experience in running a government more time.

He also said these former opposition leaders were still adjusting to their new role.

“You have got to give them opportunity and time. They have been in the opposition. That's why they make a lot of remarks as though they are still in opposition.

“So please be patient. They are learning fast, they are intelligent people. Most importantly, they are honest in serving the rakyat,” he told The Star.

On the appointment of Lim Guan Eng as finance minister, Daim, who once held the portfolio himself, said it had a positive impact on the nation's psyche as it was done based on ability, and not race.

He also noted the DAP leader's successful management of Penang's finances when he was chief minister.

“The appointment has de-politicised the post, which is a good thing given that the Finance Ministry has often been used to reward Umno loyalists in the past.

“Now the gravy train has stopped,” he added.

Daim, who is a member of the council of eminent persons, pointed out that Lim was not the first Chinese Malaysian to be appointed as finance minister.

“The appointment was made based on consultation with the various parties.

“Malaysians, in general, should accept his appointment based on his vast experience and knowledge, and not his race,” he added.

Dain also clarified that the roles of the finance minister and Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali would not overlap.

“The economic affairs minister takes the place of the minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of the economic planning unit.

“The economic minister does the planning and makes sure the project is implemented properly. He will monitor and supervise.

“The finance minister will look for money lah,” he added. -Mkini
