Online petitions launched to support, oppose Harapan's AG pick

Two separate petitions have been uploaded to support and to object to senior lawyer Tommy Thomas’ nomination as the next attorney-general.

As at 12.30am today, the petition objecting to the nomination of Thomas had garnered nearly 14,000 signatures out of its goal of 1,000.

However, the wording of seven out of eight paragraphs of the petition appears to have been copied from a Malay-language report published by The Malaysian Insight last Saturday on the standoff between the government and the palace over Thomas’ nomination.

The second last line of the petition reads, “The Malaysian Insight is made to understand that the other Malay Rulers also support the Yang Dipertuan Agong’s stand. They were said to insist that the attorney-general ought to be a Malay and profess the religion of Islam,” with the words “Malay” and “Islam” are highlighted in capital letters.

The last line, which is the only line that is not copied from The Malaysian Insight, reads, “In conclusion, let us all sign the petition opposing Thomas’ appointment as attorney-general.”

The text of the petition was signed off under the pseudonym “Pejuang Melayu” (Malay Fighter). It is unclear when exactly the petition was made.

Meanwhile, at the same time, the petition supporting Thomas had garnered over 1,500 signatures within about 10 hours of its creation.

The text of the petition is a single line that reads, “Malaysia 2.0 is beyond race. Malaysia 2.0 is all for meritocracy.”

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had confirmed yesterday that Thomas is the only person nominated as the government’s choice to replace Mohd Apandi Ali as attorney-general.

Earlier, it was reported that the Conference of Rulers had put the matter on hold for about a week over the choice of a non-Muslim as the candidate.

The Malay Rulers are set to deliberate on the matter during a special meeting tomorrow, while Mahathir said efforts are being made to convince the rulers on the government’s choice. -Mkini
