Stay retired and don't tarnish gov't's image: Daim to Ting
Last week, developer Ting Pek Khiing remerged in the public limelight after keeping a low profile for 16 years, claiming that he would embark on an RM30 billion project in Langkawi.
This sparked off concern that crony capitalism would resurface now that Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister again.
However, Mahathir's son and Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz revealed that the state government did not receive a proposal regarding Ting's project.
In an interview with The Star, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin said the businessman, who was involved in the controversial Bakun Dam project in Sarawak during Mahathir's first tenure as prime minister, should remain retired.
“My advice to Tan Sri Ting is: 'Get well and best to stay retired. Please help the government by not tarnishing its image'.
“If he is serious, let his children do the project. But show the money,” he added.
Daim, who is a member of the council of eminent persons, said he would also advise the government to award all projects via open tender.
The former minister also stressed that the mainstream media would become more important when asked how can it be ensured that prized land was not sold by the government to selected developers privately at low prices.
“For far too long, the mainstream media in Malaysia had been timid and irrelevant. By exposing such scandals, it will certainly provide a check and balance in the administration,” he added.
Daim claimed that the mainstream media failed to protect the interest of the nation and rakyat during former premier Najib Abdul Razak's administration.
“The fourth estate is important. We must always keep an eye on any wrongdoing,” he added.
To another question, Daim claimed that corruption was not as rampant during his time in the government.
“There was corruption, but now it is blatant,” he added.
As for the biggest challenged faced by the council of eminent persons, Daim said it was to cleanse the corrupted system.
“To do that, political willpower will be the main criterion for success. I am confident that the Harapan government has the gumption to do just that,” he added.
Other members of the council are former Bank Negara governor Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Petronas president Hassan Marican, economist KS Jomo and Hong Kong-based tycoon Robert Kuok. - Mkini
