STILL DREAMING, THE DEATH BLOW COMES FOR NAJIB & ZAHID’S UMNO: LED BY ANIFAH, SENIOR SABAH UMNO LEADERS TO FORM NEW PARTY – REPORT
SEVERAL senior Sabah Umno leaders might form a new party to rebrand themselves after the humiliating 14th general election defeat, said sources.
A party insider told The Malaysian Insight that the state leaders, dissatisfied with the party leadership at the federal level, want to either form a party or take over an existing one.
The assemblymen want to band together in a state-based party instead of a national one, said the insider.
“The political landscape in Sabah and Sarawak has changed.
“They are fed up with parties being controlled by their national office in Peninsular Malaysia.
“They want a party that champions the rights of the state, Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and autonomy.”
One person believed to be calling the shots is Kimanis Umno chief Anifah Aman, the brother of former chief minister Musa Aman.
Sources told The Malaysian Insight that Anifah is upset with the former administration, which did nothing to fulfil MA63 and instead used the issue to fish for votes in GE14.
“This is also perhaps why Anifah did not walk out of Parliament when most lawmakers from Umno did,” said a source, referring to the walkout staged by Barisan Nasional and PAS MPs over the selection of the Dewan Rakyat speaker on the first day of the Parliament sitting.
Anifah has yet to respond to calls or text messages from The Malaysian Insight.
There are now 10 Umno assemblymen in the Sabah Legislative Assembly. Parti Bersatu Sabah has six and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, one.
There are also two former United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) reps who did not join the Parti Warisan Sabah government when their party left BN.
The ruling parties count 35 assemblymen among its ranks. Warisan has 21, Upko (4), DAP (6), PKR (2) and two Umno reps who crossed over on May 10.
Sources said among those likely to join Anifah in a new party are Masidi Manjun and newly appointed state Umno chief Hajiji Noor.
The once-outspoken Masidi has been under the radar in recent weeks, and it is learnt that he has confided in close friends that he wants to leave Umno.
The Umno reps were to have left earlier and formed Gabungan Bersatu Sabah with like-minded parties as the new coalition to replace BN in the state.
This was mooted following an understanding reached between Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) president Jeffrey Kitingan and Musa, the then state BN chairman cum state Umno liaison chief.
Musa, however, has gone missing.
The name of the proposed coalition has been changed several times, with “Gabungan Bersatu” being the latest one bandied about.
The pact would include Star, Sabah Progressive Party, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and the party to be formed by the Umno reps.
A source in Star confirmed that Jeffrey and Anifah have initiated talks with a Sarawak ruling party to form a Borneo bloc.
“I was told that a leader from the party will make a visit to Sabah soon to initiate the Borneo bloc. This will be the next big step taken by the parties,” said a party member.
Neither Star nor PBS has revealed who the Sarawak leader is, but there has been talk that Jeffrey recently met with Parti Rakyat Sarawak president James Masing.
