SEMENYIH: The Housing and Local Government Ministry will meet with the Forest City project developer on Monday to learn more about the project, says its minister Zuraidah Kamaruddin.
"We will be meeting the developer, the state government, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and local authorities," she told reporters after visiting Eco Majestic project here on Saturday (Sept 1).
"The Ministry will submit a report to the Cabinet on the matter later. Only then will the government decide on foreign ownership related to the project," she said.
"We also want to know what transpired between the developer and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak," Zuraidah added.
.The Forest City project came into the spotlight after Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said last Monday (Aug 27) that Malaysia would not allow foreigners to buy residential units in the Forest City project, which is located in Johor.
He was quoted by Reuters as saying: "One thing is certain, that city that is going to be built cannot be sold to foreigners. We are not going to give visas for people to come and live here".
However, on Tuesday (Aug 28), the Prime Minister's Office in a statement clarified that the purchase of properties did not guarantee automatic residency in Malaysia.
It said that Malaysia has imposed specific conditions to be fulfilled before foreigners could purchase property, irrespective of nationality.
It was reported that two-thirds of the homebuyers in Forest City are from China.- Star
