Syed Saddiq Is Very Angry With The ‘Back-Stabbing’ Senate

Actually, if the Senate’s sole purpose is merely to automatically approve all Parliament Bills, and if the Senate must not “stab the Government in the back” by rejecting or vetoing Parliament Bills, then there is no longer any need for a Senate.

Dewan Negara has “stabbed the Government in the back” by refusing to repeal the Anti-Fake News Act 2018, said Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, reported The Star today (READ MORE HERE).

It appears that, just like many from his generation, Syed Saddiq does not understand how democracy works and what the function of the Senate is versus the function of Parliament.

Syed Saddiq is angry that the Senate ‘back-stabbed’ Parliament by not automatically passing the Bill to repeal the Anti-Fake News Act 2018

To Syed Saddiq (and those from his generation), the Senate is there merely to rubber-stamp all Parliament Bills. The Senate is not there to ensure checks-and-balances or to veto Parliament if need be.

Actually, if the Senate’s sole purpose is merely to automatically approve all Parliament Bills, and if the Senate must not “stab the Government in the back” by rejecting or vetoing Parliament Bills, then there is no longer any need for a Senate.

(And imagine how much money Malaysia can save and there will no longer be any need for a Tabung Harapan to raise money).

The sole purpose of the Senate is to be a rubber stamp to Parliament

I mean, that is just like saying we need two signatories to a cheque but the second signatory MUST automatically sign the cheque (or must pre-sign the entire cheque book). Then you might as well have just one signatory if the second signatory has no right to NOT sign the cheque.

Anyway, in the past, we had further checks-and-balances when after the Senate passes any Parliament Bill it has to go to His Majesty the Agong for assent and signing. In other words, in the past, the cheques needed THREE signatures.

Now the cheque does not need the Agong’s signature. Even without the Agong’s signature the cheque can be cashed. And, since the Senate is supposed to pre-sign the entire cheque book, that essentially means you only need ONE signature to take out all the money from the bank.

The Agong, just like the Senate, is also a rubber-stamp to Parliament and His Majesty’s signature is no longer required for Parliament Bills to become law

That, in essence, is what Syed Saddiq is saying. No need for the Agong. No need for the Senate. Once Parliament passes any Bill it MUST become law even though Pakatan Harapan won only 121 out of 222 seats and 48% of the votes in the 9th May 2018 general election.

Now, remember what I wrote in the past about democracy being the tyranny of the minority over the majority? Yes, 5.7 million or 17.8% of Malaysians who voted Pakatan Harapan decide on behalf of 32 million Malaysians what happens to Malaysia.

Oh, and the Pakatan Harapan supporters will insist that the ‘majority’ of Malaysians support them when it is actually only 17.8% and not more than 50% of 32 million.
