'Hallucinating' Hadi should worry more about rising tide against PAS - Kit Siang

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang said today that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang should worry more about the tide turning against his own party instead of against Pakatan Harapan.

Lim said this in response to Hadi claiming that the low turnout in the Port Dickson by-election was a sign of protest against Harapan.

"I am very intrigued by the statement by Hadi, who said that the low voter turnout was a sign of Harapan being punished for not fulfilling its election promises, and that the tide was turning against Harapan.

"Hadi is welcome to his illusion, as he seems to have acquired one of Najib Abdul Razak’s traits after cooperating with the former prime minister – constantly subject to fits of hallucination.

"Hadi should be more worried about the tide turning against PAS and the party’s declining fortunes than that of Harapan, after leading PAS to an unprecedented shrinking from a national party with elected representatives throughout Peninsular Malaysia, to a regional party ensconced in the Malay states in the east coast, Kedah and Perlis," he said in a statement today.

According to Lim, Hadi has undone his party's successes in reaching out to other races, religions and regions by former PAS leaders Fadzil Noor, Yusof Rawa and Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Anwar won the Port Dickson by-election by a landslide yesterday, securing a larger majority despite a lower turnout. 

He received 31,016 votes, winning with a 23,560-vote majority. PAS' Mohd Nazari Mokhtar received 7,456 votes, while former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohd Isa Samad, who contested as an independent, obtained 4,230.

Harapan won by a 17,710-vote majority in the last general election. The turnout in the by-election was 58.25 percent compared to the 83.16 percent seen during the 14th general election.

Lim said Anwar winning 71.3 percent of the popular vote was higher than Najib's 62 percent in Pekan, Hadi's 59.3 percent in Marang, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's 51.4 percent in Bagan Datukand MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong's 43.98 percent in Ayer Hitam.

"The Port Dickson by-election results is a very promising signpost for Malaysia’s future as it showed that Harapan has been able to maintain two goals which are significant not only to the continued success of Harapan but the building of a 'New Malaysia'.

"(These are) the ability to sustain and maintain the support of non-Malay voters and the ability to win more Malay electoral support with the passage of time," his statement read.

"In the Port Dickson by-election, Harapan had made inroads into many Malay-majoritypolling districts – which are good signs for the future.

"As Anwar pointed out in his victory speech in Port Dickson last night, what is most astounding about the by-election is that all ethnic groups have come together to support him as the MP and the eighth prime minister-designate." - Mkini
